This painting is a companion piece to Steampunk Jack. While killing prostitutes in the Whitechapel district was his specialty, Jack is about to meet his match in this East London alley. That’s not Jack in the doorway, that’s just their business manager.

Airship Armada

Hear the raucous cries of he seagulls echo above the beach as the waves wash upon the sand. Airships sail in stately procession across the sky towards the sinking sun. A Victorian lady follows the flight of the royal warships, the flying navy of her country.

I placed the line of sight above the horizon so the viewer could feel as though they were on the deck of an airship too!

The airship, “HMS Standish” floats above the towering mountain peaks in all her Victorian splendor sailing slowly and serenely towards undiscovered lands beyond on a mission of exploration. Boldly going where no man, no, wait that’s the starship Enterprise …never mind.

Umm, did you know that HMS stands for “her or his majesty’s ship”?

Rainy Night Blues

A summer thunderstorm drenches the city and isolates the pedestrians under awnings and umbrellas to escape the downpour. Car tires swish through puddles on the wet pavement as the rain beats a steady tattoo on the city streets. The distant rumble of thunder joins the rumble of traffic and bright downtown lights challenge the sporadic flashes of lightning illuminating the dark sky above.

Airship by Moonlight

The intrepid airship “Gypsy wind” floats across the night sky catching the light of a brilliant full moon. Only the flap and sputter of the steam driven propeller breaks the silence of the night as she sails past the clock tower towards distant lands and adventures.

One Stormy Night

I have always loved a good thunderstorm!

This painting was inspired by the album cover of “One Stormy Night” which shows the blurry image of a man and woman seen through a rain drenched window glass. The first Mystic Moods Orchestra album "One Stormy Night" was released in 1965. This record sets storm and rain noises against easy-listening orchestral sounds. I purchased the album and often played it during real thunderstorms as I sat on our enclosed porch with my family and watched and listened to the rain beating on the roof and pouring down outside our windows.

This painting features my beautiful grand daughter, Callie Tuchel. She is an emerging artist herself and she posed for me. Naturally this painting is not for sale and is part of the family collection but open addition prints are available

Excuse Me?

I thoroughly enjoyed working on this painting, one of my rare figure studies. In fact I plan on creating many more figurative works. The pose here says it all, "Excuse me?".

Oriental Theater Milwaukee

The Oriental Theatre is located in the East Side neighborhood of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It was built and opened in 1927 as a movie palace, and features two minaret towers. It is officially known as the Oriental Landmark Theatre.

The theater is the world record holder for continual showings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It has played as a Saturday midnight movie since January 1978.



Buffalo and Broadway Milwaukee's 3rd Ward

Cold rain and sleet form the backdrop for this painting of a small section of Milwaukee's HistoricThird Ward. People hurry along the wet pavement seeking the shelter of the large overhang and wish for an early spring.

Babydoll

This is without a doubt the creepiest painting I've ever made.  I asked my (at the time) teenage daughter if I could use one of her old dolls as a model and she gave me Babydoll. I proceeded to mutilate the doll for the scary effect I was after only to find out she still wanted her doll intact. Who knew? I painted this about 30 years ago, and then roughly 15 years ago I revisited it and added the Raven.

She wrote a paper on it in college writing class when she was required to write a description of a work of art. She received an "A" on the assignment so it wasn't a total loss. At least that's how I see it.

This painting actually made me feel very uneasy while I was painting it late at night and I had to quit and only worked on it during the day after that. I didn't like the look in the doll's eye staring at me from the canvas. My traumatized daughter has forgiven me and we still laugh about it every once in awhile.

Halloween Dare

The little boy dressed as Batman, takes the dare and bravely heads to the scary old house for Trick-or-Treat. His older sister and friends huddle together outside the gate. The light is on so someone or something must be home!

This was a lot of fun to paint ...Halloween, jack-o-lanterns and haunted houses with bats and even a black cat. Is that a creepy face on the  spooky tree?

The Chicago Theatre

Sudden Downpour Opening Night

The theater has just let out and thunder and rain greet the crowd as cabs and buses carry the patrons on their way. Wet pavements cause neon reflections to shimmer and glisten as the rain washes the grime from the city streets.
